External Piety vs. Inward Disposition

How do external piety and our inward disposition fit together? There is a struggle with Christian hypocrisy when our outward does not seem to match the inward motives of the heart. Is external piety always bad, or do these work together somehow? Lastly, how has the normalcy of the social media 'highlight reel' influenced our Christian culture? Perhaps we can learn a lesson from the tax collector's humility in Luke 18:13 as well as Jesus' admonition to the Scribes and Pharisees.
